Web Resources You Can Afford

HTML Editors

*Note of Caution: Nvu, Coffee Cup, and Kompozer do not handle php very well. They tend to strip the php out or move it when you save. You can get around this by opening up the saved file with notepad and then entering any php that you need to insert.

KompoZer

http://www.kompozer.net/

Probably the best free "WYSIWYG" HTML editor available. Bills itself as the “unofficial Nvu bug-fix release.” This is the one you should download and use. A history of its predecesors is offered below but only for background information. Kompozer also has a site manager (you can open multiple tabs) and a cascading style sheet manager,

*The following are only provided to give you a background view of the two main open source "WYSIWYG" editors that led up to Kompozer. Kompozer is the editor that we recommend you should be using.

NVU (pronounced en-view, as in “New view”)

http://www.nvu.com/

NVU is an upgraded re-work of Mozilla that was sponsored by Linspire. Linspire is the company that promotes its version of the open source operating system Linux along with an extensive library of applications to use with it.

SeaMonkey [Internet Suite from Mozilla Foundation]

http://www.mozilla.org/

SeaMonkey is a community project to develop quality code for the former “Mozilla Application Suite” with an emphasis on Firefox, the browser, and Thunderbird, the e-mail client application. Firefox is a top-line browser you can customize however you like. Thunderbird is great for managing multiple e-mail accounts which makes it a solid replacement for Outlook. Both of these applications are free and a joy to use.

Robert “KaiRo” Kaiser, head of the Mozilla Localization Project within the SeaMonkey Council, announced the release of version 1.1.4 of SeaMonkey on August 6, 2007. This update resolves some security issues particularly with Firefox and Thunderbird. So, if you are using SeaMonkey be sure you are using the 1.1.4 version.

The Mozilla composer can be accessed from within SeaMonkey by using CTRL + 4. This is a pretty good basic HTML editor but has more bugs and is more unstable than NVU or Kompozer listed above.

FileZilla

This is an excellent FTP program and it is FREE!

Hosting

For Hosting I have the highest recommendation for HostGator. They are the only hosting company I have ever dealt with that you can consistantly reach on the phone at any hour for your sales or technical questions. (Paid Affiliate Link)
